Hello Again!
Thank you so much for having the sheer brazen constitution to continue to read through my scribblings here on my “Blog” (sp) or “Tweet”(sp) or whatever it is this is. My kind friends have not chucked me to the curb, as yet, for being, “an insufferably pedantic hermit with little to no understanding of the modern world”. Apparently, I also lack basic grammar and punctuation skills. But, that is all old news. My magnificent wife has been saying all of that for years, these young people have just co-opted it.
There in lies an interesting point. The idea that there is “nothing new under the sun” is well, nothing new. It is an adage that has always fascinated me. Growing up every moment of everyday was an adventure. I grew up in an ancient farm house on a bunch of acreage with my parents and a pile o’dogs. It was an isolated existence from the city or, even my other neighbors. It did however, afford me many more cohorts in the form of the trees, bugs, barns and woodland animals of every sort.
When I grew older and started going into the city , I found another wilderness! One of concrete and steel and fluorescent lights. This was a place, I thought far wilder than I had come. This was the place of the most peculiar beast of all: modern man. They had so much going on! Everything was so loud and yet far quieter than the forest. Everything was so bright yet softer than the sun. Everything was so new and yet far more stagnant than the fields. I learned and imbibed of its sweet succor and felt intermingled with its threads.
I grew older still and, realized that the city was a place, that from the outside looked as though it was perpetually moving forward. Like a boy, looking out bus window at a skyline that was ever in motion. But, as soon as his feet landed on the pavement he realized that it was just a billboard on rollers. The city stood monolithic and unchanging in its form. It wanted nothing. It did not care if you were there or not. It would stand still until the earth reclaimed it.
The city had one resource that my country home did not: People. And there I found the absolute refutation of that old adage “there is nothing new under the sun.”. For I found the most endlessly complex and abyssially deep resource that I had ever come across. That of the human mind. In these automatons that pushed by me everyday in their trendy clothes and serious expressions or their raggedy shreds and joyful expressions, the human mind shown through.
I had already been working on a regimen of self discipline and mental nourishment from the moment I could read. My parents were older and gave adult material like biographies of influential thinkers and leaders. Along with that a robust diet of all manner of science fiction and classic literature. When you are living out on a farm with no cable or (GASP!!) no internet, you invest your time in different ways. So, I was already mapping out my emotions and ideas and ideals and beginning what would become a life long study of human existence. I began where it all begins with myself. Combine with that, an endless curiosity in all things living, you get a potent obsessive with nothing but the mind on his mind.
With all those tools unwittingly in tow I started to notice. I started to learn. I started to reach out into other peoples experience and saddle it side by side with my own. I started to profile. I started to begin to delve deeper into myself through the lens of others. I wanted to help. I wanted to wade so deep into the waters of humanity that I was immersed in it. Until one day “I” became “We”.
When you gain Knowledge and formulate it into Wisdom you become responsible for it. Once I had seen the Universal through the Individual the phrase “there is nothing new under the sun.” started occurring to me over and over. Realizing the obejectivist and scientific meaning I started to weigh the truth of it to my own experience. In the former context it made complete sense. Since Matter is neither created nor destroyed then all, is all that exists. Everything that has or ever shall be since the creation of our physical universe exists extemporaneously. Or at least that is my Understanding.
That said, all that I have found in the depth of my mind and that of others, speaks to the endless variety and alchemy inherent in our Inner life. It is a dual life with a second sun. As with the Outer life, all is all that exists but our ability to fathom and explore the Inner of ALL the Suns that dwell with in the minds of living things, makes for a different interpretation of “there is nothing new under the sun.”
In truth a new adage must be fashioned that is a real representation of existence. “All is new under the Suns.” A bit trite and clunky but there it is. The silly reduction of all that is by a very silly “insufferably pedantic hermit with little to no understanding of the modern world”.
As always thank you for taking the time to read my scribblings and to my good friends for pull me into this new “digital space”. They are stalwart and, possibly insane for attempting this task. But, they do it none the less.
Your Humble Servant,
Patrick Ames
